The fourth in Marvel/Netflix’s interconnected Defenders series, Iron Fist, comes to Netflix next month - and we’re right in the middle of marketing time for the new show. Joining Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, Iron Fist stars Finn Jones as Danny Rand, a man who was presumed dead as a boy, but who has actually been training in mystical martial arts, and has finally returned to claim his father’s business. In recent weeks, we’ve been treated to promos, trailers, and posters in the run-up to the premiere date.
Now, a new video has been released by Marvel/Netflix, combining footage from the upcoming show and an interview with its star, talking about the character’s history, motivation, and arrival back in New York City.
The clip is just over two and a half minutes long, and opens with dramatic music and a voiceover saying, “Cast away your childish needs. Bury your mother. Bury your father. Tell me who you are.” This is layered over the sounds of what could be martial arts training, and combines shots of Rand meditating with memories of his parent’s plane going down. From here, the video cuts together various clips of the show that have already appeared in trailers (along with a few moments that we have not seen before), as Jones talks about his character’s beliefs: That he will be welcomed home, that there is a dark force in the world, and that he desperately wants to do good.
The clip also brings Rand’s childhood friends Joy (Jessica Stroup) and Ward (Tom Pelphrey) into the spotlight. In the series, these are the Meachum children, now running the business built by their (and Rand’s) fathers. We also see a little more of Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick), and some phenomenal fight scenes.
This video does give us some new info on what to expect in Iron Fist - including the description of his powers as “the fire of the fist,” a force that runs through the universe, and which Danny can ignite. This is certainly an interesting take on his powers, and we’ll be interested to see more of how they adapt his very magic-heavy backstory for the series. We do also learn that we will be getting a new explanation for his dragon chest tattoo, the mark of the Iron Fist. Finally, we learn a little more about the villain of the piece - or, more accurately, that there is no one clear villain. Rand will be dealing with multiple dark forces and people who have corrupted his father’s business, and won’t know who is friend or foe for some time.
Despite the little bit of new information that we have received in this video, the majority of the scenes are ones that we have seen before. This video continues to follow the pattern set out by previous promotional materials, so fans looking for something a little bit different are bound to be disappointed. Still, with less than a month to go until Iron Fist hits our screens, we don’t want to see too much given away before we can binge the show.
