Market intelligence firm Kantar thinks that the iPhone 12 mini could set a trend for smaller, premium smartphones. With Apple having launched the iPhone 12 mini as part of its latest line-up, smaller phone form factors might also become more popular as a result … The firm said that more than 12% of smartphone buyers choose a model ‘specifically for how it fits in their hand/pocket.’ Unsurprisingly, Kantar also believes that Apple’s move into 5G will accelerate interest in the faster mobile data standard....

Reuters is reporting that iPhone 6 production was disrupted for part of June and July after Apple was forced to abandon its plans to use a thinner display backlighting system in the new handset. Suppliers to Apple are scrambling to get enough screens ready for the new iPhone 6 smartphone as the need to redesign a key component disrupted panel production ahead of next month’s expected launch, supply chain sources said …...

More than 90 civil rights groups around the world have signed an open letter objecting to what they call iPhone surveillance capabilities, asking Apple to abandon its plans for CSAM scanning. Additionally, they would also like the iPhone maker to drop plans for the iMessage nude detection, as this could place young gay people at risk. Signatories to the letter include the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Australia’s Digital Rights Watch, the UK’s Liberty, and the global Privacy International....

Emails and a video deposition by Steve Jobs are likely to form key elements of the evidence in an iPod-related antitrust case against Apple which opens in California tomorrow, reports the NYT. The case goes back more than a decade, to the time when iPods would play only music purchased from iTunes or ripped from CD, with consumers unable to play music bought from competing stores. Although Apple usually updates its iOS adoption statistics on a fortnightly basis, the company had strangely stopped updating its iOS chart last month. As iOS 9 growth appeared to have stalled, perhaps the numbers simply didn’t change significantly in that time. However, this week Apple has updated the chart with a significant jump, now reporting iOS 9 was seen on 84% of active devices as of April 18th. New data is out from Counterpoint Research providing their analysis on U.S. smartphone market shares in 2021. Apple is being sued in China for failing to include iPhone chargers in the box. The report says that the lawsuit has been put forward for ‘public interest’ status, suggesting that it could be fast-tracked or given a higher profile.
