Automatic app updates are nice, it gives users the option to let apps update automatically in the background without needing to do anything. However, this can be a little bit much, especially over cellular, for users who have limited data plans or data caps. As with most other things, Apple has a way to limit automatic app updates to Wi-Fi only, letting users with more aggressive data plans to preserve their pool of data while on the go....

Data from Localytics shows that the iPhone 5s appears to be outselling the iPhone 5c by a factor of 3.4. The data is based on examining web analytics from 20M unique iPhone connections to mobile and web apps between launch and 8pm last night. This pattern is unlikely to be maintained in the longer-term: as the higher-end device, the 5s was always going to attract more of the type of people who have to have it now....
Bloomberg is the latest publication to report on iPhone shipments growing in China after COVID-19 lockdowns lifted. Apple was responsible for leading a rebound in the smartphone market in June as Chinese users are buying more iPhone 13 than ever. According to Bloomberg, China’s mobile phone shipments jumped 9.2% in June, led by Apple and Samsung. The Cupertino company has become the fourth-largest player in the country, which suggests the bulk of the rebound in demand was for iPhones....
While many believe that the iPhone X’s display is best in class for adopting OLED, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are still popular phones, even with an LCD display. However, iPhone display supplier Japan Display has been struggling over the past year as Apple has ditched the company in favor of Samsung for its OLED displays in the iPhone X. Nikkei reports that obtain $517 million through “third-party share allocations and asset sales” as the company scrambles to find capital to supply screens for the iPhone....
Apple’s iPhone has once again topped the most used camera list for the popular photo sharing website, Flickr. And not just smartphone cameras. All cameras. This comes as no surprise as Apple has long been the reigning champion of the most used camera in the world. According to data from Flickr, iPhones take the top spot with 54% of the top 100 cameras used by photographers. Behind Apple’s best-selling device, comes Canon in second place with 23% and Nikon rounding out the top three with 18%....
It may be time to wave farewell to cheap Chinese consumer goods, people, as it looks like Foxconn intends raising contract manufacturing prices as it attempts to stop workers in those Chinese factories churning out cheap consumer goods for the rest of the world from, you know, killing themselves in protest at the poor wages and working conditions they’re enduring. Reuters reports that price hikes are on the way, citing Citibank analyst, Chang Kaiwei....
Apple’s leader Steve Jobs has often conceded his respect for Sony, but scored a home run around the Japanese consumer electronics company when he introduced the iPod, after which the rest is now history. Now Sony plans a fightback, running to the cold embrace of Google’s Android for a future iPhone competitor (probably). News this morning is that Sony is attempting to hire Android engineers at its London offices. They’ll work in the mobile gaming division....
As we noted earlier today, Apple has discontinued its iPod nano and iPod shuffle. The company has also simplified and updated its pricing on the current iPod touch, bringing pricing down by up to $100. As part of the move, Apple is making the 32GB and 128GB models the only options and reducing prices in the process. Previously Apple offered 16, 32, 64, and 128GB options for the iPod touch with pricing at $199, $249, $299, and $399, respectively....

Shortly after the iPad Pro launched in November, Apple acknowledged an issue facing some numbers of users (luckily not myself) where the tablet would become unresponsive after a period of charging. At the time, Apple said it was aware of the issue and was investigating. Three weeks later, Apple has updated its support document that details the issue with some good news. While the fix was previously to hold both the sleep/wake button and the Home button for several seconds until it restarts, Apple now says to update the software to hopefully totally fix the issue....
With the launch of iOS 8.4 earlier this summer, Apple removed support for Home Sharing, prompting the users to voice their dissatisfaction with the company’s decision. Eddy Cue then revealed that Home Sharing support would return with iOS 9, and sure enough, it did. Interesting breakdown over at Asymco. It appears that while it still over one third of all iOS devices sold, the iPod touch is trending down overall as the iPad is pulling in a bigger percentage and the iPhone continues to break into more markets with more carriers. It always bothered me that Apple put iPod touch numbers in with other iPods when it clearly belongs in the same category as the iPhone....
The iPad mini 6 pre-orders opened just after the “California Streaming” event, with the first orders arriving on September 24. It turns out Apple included a stealthy update with iOS 14.2 that didn’t appear in the release notes. With the latest public release, iPhone 8 and later have gained support for 1080p FaceTime HD video calls on Wi-Fi and for iPhone 12, on 5G and Wi-Fi. Discovered by MacMagazine (via Google Translate), Apple didn’t detail the upgrade in resolution for FaceTime calls that has arrived for iPhones all the way back to iPhone 8....
