Update: This change was unfortunately reverted in the final shipping build of iOS 16.2. Apple has made a useful little enhancement in the latest iOS 16.2 beta for iPhone 14 Pro users. In earlier versions, iPhone 14 Pro would only show two status icons (battery and either WiFi or single bars), as the activated Dynamic Island content was very wide. However, this is no longer the case. Now when playing music, the island compresses down in width to allow all three status icons to be visible — complete with a sleek animation....

A fresh claim of iPhone workers being used as forced labor in China has appeared today, following an investigation by the Tech Transparency Project. Gizmodo is reporting that Apple has added another layer of protection/rejection to the App Store approval process. According to some (well sourced?) developer Tweets, Apple has added a static analysis tool to look for private API calls inside submitted Apps. According to Gizmodo, they’re looking for apps that have been developed with third party SDKs. That might not bode well for Adobe’s next version of Flash CS5 which features exporting Flash applications to iPhone....

I haven’t yet seen any particular reason to give Microsoft’s Edge browser a try, but one feature added to the beta today looks neat: you can now use a photo from your camera roll to perform a search in your choice of search engine. This is not just a reverse Google Images search, where you can search for a photo already online, but is smarter than that … You can select a photo from your own camera roll, highlight a portion of it and then search for that item....

It takes a lot of guts to accuse some of the most popular iPad apps of putting form over function. That’s exactly what the Nielsen Norman Group has accomplished with a usability study which has proved in ways more than one that, unfortunately, many iPad apps and websites could use a little work in the usability department. The study stems from numerous observations collected from sixteen individuals who have owned iPads for two months....

The venerable iPad mini 4 still has its fans, despite its now somewhat odd position in the iPad line-up: more expensive than the 9.7-inch iPad, yet smaller and significantly less capable. Earlier today, a keyboard with much better support for the supposed iPad Pro, a device that has been rumored for some time now, was shown off thanks to the iOS 9 code. Steve Troughton Smith and Hiraku Wang now suggest that the iPad Pro will feature a resolution of 2732×2048, which at 12.9-inches, comes out to 263 pixels-per-inch. The current iPad Air 2 features a resolution of 2048×1536 at 9.7-inches. This means that the iPad Pro will nearly have the width resolution of two 9....
