With the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus now officially in customers’ hands after a record opening weekend of iPhone sales, today we get a look at various benchmark results for the devices compared to the competition from AnandTech. Ahead of the site’s full technical review of the new iPhones, today it posted several benchmark results showing the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus win out by just about every metric. Ericsson has filed multiple iPhone patent infringement claims against Apple in two separate US lawsuits. In all, the company claims that Apple has infringed 12 patents, including ones relating to 5G. A new report from Gene Munster today shows how little the iPhone 8 lead times have changed since pre-orders opened on Friday, highlighting how much the iPhone X is affecting sales of the new entry-level models. Apple is preparing an update to its iOS 7 mobile operating system that will fix issues with Mail attachment encryption, iBeacon connectivity, and security problems that exist in the current version, reports MacRumors. There is also speculation that the new version could make it easier for users to disconnect their phone numbers from iMessage, but there’s no indication that this will be in the 7.1.2 update. I don’t think I’ve ever before written a feature request the moment a new operating system version has been announced, but one super-disappointing discovery prompts me to do so: iPad widgets in iPadOS 14 get less flexibility than iPhone ones. One of Apple’s key suppliers reported earnings today, showing an uptick in its augmented reality and 3D-sensing business. Lumentum Holdings serves as Apple’s primary supplier of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser components, or VCSEL. This component is what’s used in the iPhone’s front-facing camera for its Face ID and Animoji technology… In its earnings release, Lumentum Holdings touted a better-than-expected June quarter. The company explained that it has experienced an uptick in its AR and 3D-sensing business sooner-than-expected, which is attributable to Apple ramping up production of this year’s new iPhones....
