Apple has given Chinese electronics maker Luxshare Precision Industry a big promotion, tapping the company for iPhone 13 production alongside Foxconn and Pegatron. A plan for this was first suggested more than a year ago, and is seemingly now confirmed. The company currently makes several iPhone components, but this move by Apple is a highly unusual one, letting a new assembler make the latest flagship models … To date, Luxshare has made AirPods, as well as haptic engine modules, camera modules, and metal frames for iPhones....

We’ve seen a variety of iPhone 8 leaks over recent months and now a new set of renders has emerged, this time courtesy of Onleaks. Apple will drop the Google Maps program running on iOS since 2007 in favor for a new Maps app with an Apple backend. Following the release of iOS 16 to the public on Monday, Apple has now announced that developers can finally subscribe to get more WeatherKit API requests. With this API, third-party apps can get data provided by Apple Weather as part of the Dark Sky transition. Back in 2020, Apple acquired Dark Sky – a popular weather forecasting platform that was available for both iOS and Android. As the Android app was discontinued, Apple began implementing some of Dark Sky’s features natively in iOS....

A report from IHS, via Re/code, has costed out the various components of the iPad Air 2. Naturally, these prices are estimates — the exact nature of the deals Apple negotiates with its suppliers are not common knowledge. The report says that the iPad Air 2 costs Apple $275 in materials, with the screen making up the largest share with costs around $77. This culminates to a very similar bill-of-materials to the last iPad Air, which IHS estimated was worth $264 in components....

When Apple launched its iPhone 5 battery replacement program last year, the company said that it would accept devices for replacement up to two years after purchase. Because the devices with the faulty batteries were sold between September 2012 and January 2013, two years from that date range would have given buyers until January 2015 (or March 1st, 2015, according to the page) to get their devices swapped. However, as spotted by iPhone in Canada, Apple today updated the copy on the page to state that replacements would be accepted for an additional year....

According to new data from Counterpoint Research, Apple locked in the best-selling smartphone title during May of 2018. Carrier, China Unicom, has reportedly contracted to buy five million iPhones at a cost of $1.5 billion. The ban on WiFi was enforced by central government in Beijing, but lifted in May – when manufacturing of the device had begun. Lack of the standard may give some Chinese consumers the perception that they are being sold a sub-par version of the product, impacting sales. A Unicom spokesman, Yi Difei, said the company hopes to have WiFi in the next batch of phones: “We are talking with Apple and expect the problem to be solved by the end of this year,” he said....

I had only a few minutes to play with the iPhone 11 Pro camera on release day, taking just a few hand-held iPhone night photos to test Night Mode. But a couple of readers made a good point in response. Although the vast, vast majority of iPhone photos will be handheld, it wasn’t fair to compare the results against a DSLR or mirrorless camera when those were tripod-mounted 30-second exposures. For a fair comparison, I should also mount the iPhone on a tripod, and let it also use its longest-available (pseudo) shutter speed…...
