A new report today from Macotakara sheds more light on the iPhone models to be introduced later this year. The blog says the 6.5-inch ‘iPhone X Plus’ is roughly the same size as the current iPhone 8 Plus, and offers a few more tidbits of information… The report cites a “reliable supplier information source” and claims that the rumored 6.5-inch OLED iPhone X model coming this later this is roughly the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus, which features a 5....

Two Apple analysts examining the same supply chain data have reached very different conclusions about what they mean for iPhone XR sales. Supply chain analyst Cowan said that although it sees some issues in display panel shipments, the firm believes that production indicates that iPhone XR sales will account for fully half of all iPhones sold … Philip Elmer-DeWitt says the firm has cited six different factors in support of this....

Netflix recently expanded its corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the debut of Luke Cage, a series following the titular bulletproof man played by Mike Colter. Previously, Netflix had premiered two seasons of Daredevil focused on the Man Without Fear Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), as well as one of Jessica Jones, the second Hell’s Kitchen based series, starring Krysten Ritter. Next up in Netflix’s Marvel lineup is Iron Fist, before all four heroes team up for The Defenders....

You’re not alone. I’ve been contacted by a number of readers who say that their battery life has fallen thorough the floor since applying the update a little over a week ago. Social media is awash with complaints, and there’s plenty of discussion about this over on Apple’s support forums. Many of those suffering say they are using an iPhone 13 Pro Max, but there are reports of other iPhones being affected, too....

Earlier today, Apple released its fourth beta of iOS 6 beta 4. The biggest change of note, which we broke the news on earlier, is the lack of a YouTube player in the new build. YouTube is a Google-built product, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe that Apple removed the app, just like they dropped Google Maps in favor of their own 3D mapping database. While that’s the biggest thing of note, there are some other new features and enhancements....

The latest numbers from Strategy Analytics reveal that iOS and Android combined to capture 96% global market share in the third quarter. iOS and Android accounted for 12.3% market share and 83.6% global market share respectively for the three-month period ending September. Those figures arrive just one day after the research firm reported that Chinese company Xiaomi has become the third-largest smartphone maker in the world. Android continued to be a dominant player in global smartphone operating system market share, increasing its lead over iOS by three percentage points compared to the year-ago quarter....

Keychain basics According to Apple, a Keychain in an IOS device is a secure storage container that can be used to store sensitive infromation like usernames, passwords,network passwords, authentication tokens for different applications. Apple itself uses the Keychain to store Wi-fi network passwords, VPN credentials etc. It’s a sqlite database file located at /private/var/Keychains/keychain-2.db and all the data stored in it is encrypted. Developers usually want to leverage this feature of the operating system to store credentials rather than storing it themseleves in NSUserDefaults, plist files etc....

According to the Korea Herald, Apple’s new iPad will likely utilize Samsung’s newly revealed Super PLS technology. The current iPad, as well as the iPhone 4, use a technology called IPS, which provides outstanding viewing angles. Samsung’s PLS technology is superior to IPS in many regards. The viewing angles provided by PLS are improved as the display actually shifts the shape of the individual pixels so they are displayed brighter and with better contrast from more angles....

Apple has drawn attention to an inspiring example of iPads helping refugee children, some of whom have never before set foot in a school. In one school, there are 325 students who come from 39 different countries, many of whom have fled war in the Middle East. iPads play a key role in helping the kids overcome a fear of looking foolish in the classroom … Apple describes the school in Dusseldorf, Germany, where German is a second language for 20% of the students....

HD Voice – using LTE data to offer enhanced voice quality during phone calls – has been available on Apple devices since the iPhone 6, and it now appears the iPhone 8 supports the next generation of the technology. A Japanese site is reporting that the iPhone 8 supports Enhanced Voice Services (EVS), and this seems to be supported by UK carrier EE … Makotakara noted the reference in an Engadget Japan interview with the president of Japanese telco KDDI....

In January, we reported that Apple would be launching a new 4-inch iPhone in March with a design “nearly identical” to that of the iPhone 5s from 2013. Since then, several rumors and teases from various case makers have teased that the new 4-inch iPhone may have a design that looks a bit closer to the iPhone 6 in both shape and look. Checks with additional sources indicate that the iPhone SE, to be launched at Apple’s March 21st event next week, will look “almost exactly the same” as the iPhone 5s…...

The Irish government is today formally appealing against a European Union ruling that it should have claimed an additional €13B in tax from Apple, which has its European headquarters in the country. The EU ruled that offering Apple a sweetheart tax rate of just 2.5% amounted to illegal state aid. Apple wasted no time in announcing that it would appeal the judgement soon after it was made, but the Irish government understandably took a little longer to announce that it, too, would be appealing....

Netflix has dropped a fresh batch of images for the upcoming second season of Iron Fist, showing Danny Rand obscuring his identity, as well as a Daughters of the Dragon reunion. After a flurry of updates at this year’s Comic-Con, which included a teaser and premiere date for season 2 of Marvel’s critically maligned martial arts master, these new images offer up a glimpse of what’s to come now that Danny Rand and the power of the Immortal Iron Fist are guided by new showrunner, Raven Metzner....

As we buckle up for another year, each er reflects on the most memorable products, events, trends of the year gone by. The amazingness that was Apple Maps en was a mere five days old, Apple released iOS 6 to the masses, with it came the panic-inducing Apple Maps. The platform’s marquee feature, the one with the most hype, was such a colossal failure at launch that I still can’t believe it was supposed to replace Maps....

Apple on Wednesday released iOS 16 beta 2 to developers, two weeks after the first beta release of iOS 16 announced at WWDC 2022. The update brings several tweaks across the system, and interestingly, it also adds a new menu for managing HomePod beta Software in the Home app. HomePod beta software The menu is hidden by default and appears only when the user has a HomePod beta profile installed. This way, users can easily choose which of their HomePods will receive beta software updates....

Discovered by an anonymous tipster, iOS 7’s “Accessibility” section now includes a feature that allows you to control your iPhone or iPad with left or right head movements. We’ve tested this ourselves and found it to be quite accurate, but it’s quite tedious to control your device this way since it cycles through all of the options on the screen and you move your head when it is bordering around the option you want....

Apple has just announced that iOS 7 will be publicly available on September 18th. The new version of Apple’s mobile OS will be available on the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5c, and 5S, the third- and fourth-generation iPads, iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch. Curiously, Apple lists iCloud Keychain as “coming soon” on the iOS 7 page, though most features aren’t marked that way. This could indicate that the feature will be released in a later update to iOS closer to the release of Mavericks, which is required to sync stored passwords across devices....
