Apple’s sole supplier of A-series processors for iPhones, TSMC, shared today that it expects premium smartphone shipments to decrease this year. Interestingly, the chip maker says that the cryptocurrency market is what will help keep its business growing. In a report from Nikkei, one of TSMC’s CEO’s shared specifics about its expectations for the smartphone market to see high-end model shipments decreasing and mid- to low-end devices seeing a slight boost this year....

Apple new sixth-generation iPod nano costs from $43.73, according to iSuppli’s latest tear-down analysis of the same. The 8GB version of the latest iPod carries an estimated BOM of $43.73, the second-lowest BOM of all members of the iPod line — only the fourth generation product was less expensive to manufacture at $40.80. “Instead of piling on features, as so many brands do with their latest products, Apple with the sixth-generation iPod has maintained or even removed some attributes in order to fit the form factor and function desired,” said Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst and teardown services manager, for iSuppli....

Just in time for Christmas, the Evasi0n team has released an iOS 7 compatible Jailbreak. I’ve just jailbroken my wife’s iOS iPhone 5s (long story) so I’m pretty sure it is legit. One iOS 8 feature Apple hasn’t talked about much is its ability to randomize the device’s MAC address while scanning for WiFi networks. This appears to be a security and privacy precaution as marketing and analytics companies routinely use this unique identifier to collect data about nearby devices scanning for WiFi networks. The New York Times published a story last year about a similar experiment at Nordstrom and several marketing companies selling data to retailers and more use the same method of picking up the MAC address from devices scanning for WiFi networks....

Starting in iOS 8 beta 4, which was released this past Monday to developers, Apple has begun notifying users of the soon-to-be-defunct iPhoto for iOS to migrate their iPhoto data to the totally revamped Photos app in iOS 8, as part of Apple’s new photo strategy being rolled out this fall and early next year. While photo data can be migrated out of iPhoto, Apple warns that Journals, Slideshows and Book layouts will no longer be available going forward....

Update: American Airlines has confirmed that the problem was with a bad update to the Jepson app that added Ronald Reagan Airport map. The app provides maps of runways and more information to pilots. Until the app can be fixed, the airline has informed pilots of a workaround to prevent future delays. Two years ago, American Airlines replaced the paper versions of its cockpit documents with iPad flight bags on all planes....
