Back in July, we heard reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predict that iPhone would gain periscope lenses as soon as 2022. A report followed in November saying the same. As we’re about to close out 2020, we’ve got a third report corroborating the tech that could allow Apple to bring up to 10x optical zoom to iPhone cameras should debut in the next couple of years. In the July report, Kuo didn’t share much detail beyond Apple using Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO) to supply periscope lenses for iPhone in 2022....

A new survey today claims that iPhone loyalty has fallen to an all-time low. The survey, conducted by BankMyCell, says that iPhone retention is down 15 percent over the last year. According to that data, iPhone retention was down 15.2 compared with data from March 2018. Update: Apple has not yet commented on the specific claims made, but tells us: Elcomsoft – the Russian company which sells iPhone cracking tools to governments and corporations – says that iPhones send near real-time call logs to Apple servers even when iCloud backup is switched off, and that these logs are stored for up to four months. A report last week said that a Foxconn facility had begun making the iPhone XR in India, and a new report today backs this. The Wall Street Journal’s Newley Purnell supported the report with a tweeted photo of an iPhone XR box printed with “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in India”… The specific mention of the XR is part of a more general Wall Street Journal report on India’s push to attract manufacturers to move production there, given continued uncertainty in China....

DxOMark is out today with a brand new camera ranking just for selfie cameras. The new test was designed with the same protocol as the company’s tests for rear shooters and looks to offer “neutral and reliable test data about smartphone front camera performance and image quality to consumers and other interested parties.” DxO has initially tested the front facing cameras of 12 popular smartphones.
