The launch of the iPhone 11 saw iOS market share rise in every single one of Apple’s key markets during the holiday quarter, according to the latest Kantar data. Market share gains ranged from 1.6 percentage points in the five largest EU markets to 5.8 points in Japan… Kantar said that the entry-level iPhone 11 had been twice as successful as the iPhone XR which preceded it. Wearables also proved to be a strong driver of growth, with the Apple Watch, which retailed at just $199, selling out due to unprecedented demand....

Update: Straley has shared a new video detailing the functionality of the devices 48 hours after being submerged in water. Check it out at the bottom of this post. We’ve already seen how well the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus hold up in bend tests and drop tests, and now a new video from YouTuber Zach Straley shows how well the devices fare when submerged in water. In the video, Straley submerges both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in bowls of water, pulling them out every so often to check if they are still correctly functioning....

[Update: This specific alleged chassis leak appears to be a rendering based on schematic leaks.] The latest alleged iPhone 8 chassis leak appears to further indicate that the Touch ID fingerprint sensor will be relocated to the rear side like some Android phones. Earlier rumors predicted an embedded Touch ID sensor in the display. The leaked casing (via Weibo) also features the vertical dual camera cutout above a flash cutout that we’ve seen on other claimed leaks and schematics....

One of Apple’s suppliers is expecting a lucrative year of business in 2020 thanks to the wave of 5G smartphones set to head to production, including the iPhone 12. China will lead the way with orders for components needed for 5G devices early in 2020 with Apple expected to place orders for components in the middle of the year. Apple’s supplier, Taiyo Yuden Co. produces ceramic capacitors for iPhones, other smartphone manufacturers, auto manufacturers, and more and is gearing up for a record year due to all the 5G smartphones and other devices that will ship next year....

I took a week off last week to get unpacked and settled into our new home. This was a time-consuming process, so I didn’t get much time to get out and about, but with a fabulous view from our new apartment, that didn’t stop me putting the iPhone X camera through its paces. It has become clear that Apple’s new iPhoto App is pulling mapping tiles from Apple’s own mapping services. Take this tile for instance. While they aren’t particularly good looking, Apple is no longer using third party mapping services like Google’s which iPhoto has used in the past and Apple has generally relied on for its mapping information across all of its applications, both Mac and iOS. As Apple and Google continue to distance themselves from each other, Apple is clearly moving to bring its mapping needs in-house....

Daredevil and Jessica Jones established the Hell’s Kitchen/Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015, and Luke Cage (whose namesake was a supporting player in Jessica Jones season 1) will explore the MCU version of Harlem in 2016. That means there’s only one member of The Defenders left to introduce (before that team assembles in a Netflix mini-series): Daniel Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist. Marvel COO Joe Quesada recently confirmed that Iron Fist is still moving forward, after the lack of official (and/or all-but-official) updates on the project of late helped to fuel the rumors that the fourth of Marvel’s Defenders Netflix TV show was in danger of being cancelled....

Apple has just released iOS 7 to the public. However, as noted by Apple’s update XML — which is where the OTA service in iOS gets its data — iPhone 5c and 5s users will be prompted to update to 7.0.1 when users unwrap their new devices this Friday. David Pogue and Walt Mossberg both noted in their iPhone reviews that an update for iOS was hitting this Friday, in time for the launch of the new device....

If you’ve found your iPhone 14 showing horizontal lines across the screen when waking from sleep or starting up, Apple says you can rest easy: It’s not a hardware issue. The glitch – which mostly appears to affect the iPhone 14 Pro Max – is apparently a software issue, so it’s just a question of waiting for an iOS update to fix it … iPhone 14 horizontal lines A significant number of people are reporting the issue on Reddit and elsewhere....

Independent iPhone 7 radiation safety tests have found that the model exceeded the legal limit for radio-frequency energy absorbed by human tissue. The independently commissioned tests were reportedly carried out according to federal guidelines at an accredited lab, and were replicated with three further brand-new phones to guard against the possibility of a single faulty product… The Chicago Tribune commissioned the tests of both iPhones and competitor smartphones. An iPhone 8 also initially came in over the legal limit, but was below it when the test was re-run under conditions Apple suggested were more accurate....

Could you imagine dropping your iPhone in the ocean and finding it hours later, still working? That happened to one Reddit user who has shared details of their iPhone being lost at sea. According to the Reddit post, the iPhone sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean while paddleboarding. After the tide went out seven hours later, the device had remarkably turned itself back on. Thanks to Find My, the iPhone was tracked down – even at the bottom of the ocean....

Based on supply chain data of smartphone production levels, a market intelligence company is predicting iPhone market share for Q4 2021 will hit 23.1%. That would be up from 15.9% last quarter, and enough to convincingly take the No. 1 slot from Samsung. Apple is expected to benefit from both strong holiday quarter demand, and better supply chain management than its competitors – factors also cited in an earlier tablet report …...

DxOMark is out with its full review of the iPhone XS camera system. Coming in with a score of 105, the latest flagship iPhone beat out the camera performance of all other smartphones except for Huawei’s P20 Pro with its triple-camera setup. Read on for all the details. DxOMark evaluates cameras based on a combined score of photo and video performance. The total score is not out of 100. With that it mind, the iPhone XS Max that DxO tested scored notably higher at 105 than the iPhone X, which earned 97 last year....

An iPod touch prototype has surfaced, apparently showing an alternative design for what would be the 5th-generation model of the device – and, to my eyes at least, it looks better than the model Apple actually launched … Background The iPod touch was released by Apple in 2007, alongside the original iPhone. It provided a lower-cost Wi-Fi-only device with many of the same capabilities as the iPhone – but lacking phone and cellular data features....

What is interesting about today’s information is that the new iPhone hardware is denoted as 3,1. Former iPhones were labelled like this: OG iPhone= 1,1 iPhone3G = 1,2 iPhone 3GS= 2,1 iPhone(PA Semi?) = 3,1 The iPhone 3G wasn’t a big upgrade from the original iPhone, hence only the point upgrade in the hardware code number. While it did add a 3G radio and GPS, the processor was still the ARM 11-based Samsung chip that was also used in the original iPod Touches....

There was one interesting thing missing from yesterday’s keynote: Despite all the time Apple spent talking about the chips, there was no iPhone 13 versus iPhone 12 performance comparison. Usually, Apple tells us how much faster and more powerful the latest iPhone is compared to the previous model, but this time it didn’t do that – leading some to conclude that there’s a good reason for this … Apple told us how much the iPhone 13 battery life has improved on that of the iPhone 12....
